Short version: some links on this site earn us a commission. It never changes what we recommend or what a benchmark says.

What an affiliate link is

Some outbound links to tools and services on this site are affiliate links. If you click one and then sign up or make a purchase, the vendor may pay us a commission.You pay the same price either way — the commission comes out of the vendor's margin, not your pocket.

Which links are affiliate links

We mark affiliate links where it is practical to do so, and articles that contain them carry a short disclosure near the top. If you are unsure whether a specific link is an affiliate link, assume that outbound links to commercial tools may be, and ask us if it matters to you.

What this does not affect

• Our recommendations. We write about the tools we actually use. A tool with no affiliate programme at all is covered here on the same terms as one that pays well.
• Our numbers. Costs, durations and failure rates are measurements. They are not for sale, and a vendor cannot pay to change one.
• Negative findings. If a tool we earn commission on fails a test, we publish the failure.

Why we disclose this

Disclosure is required by advertising rules in the United States and elsewhere, and it is required by the terms of most affiliate networks we work with. Beyond the legal requirement, a benchmark site that hides its commercial relationships is not worth reading. We would rather you know.
